Auto Insurance Premiums – How To Save Money

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Auto insurance costs can occupy a large part of any family’s budget. In fact, the total costs of insurance premiums take up about 7% of a family’s budget based on recent statistics. For workers who had their salary reduced, auto insurance can take up an even greater portion of their budget. For a variety of reasons, though, many families are choosing to find cheaper insurance or cut back on the insurance they have. Try these tips if you need to cut back in this area of your budget.

Start by bundling your policies together. Many auto insurance companies offer discounts to their customers who keep multiple policies with their company. Even if you only have one car, keeping your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance and your auto insurance with the same company can save a lot of money.

While you’re doing this, inquire about increasing your deductible. Just by increasing your auto insurance deductible from $500 to $1000 you could potentially save about $10 a month or more off your principle payment. Since you likely will not claim small damage to your vehicle, increasing your deductible shouldn’t affect your finances too much.

If these methods don’t work, try shopping around at different companies. Auto insurance rates can differ a lot between companies. Even if you think you already have the lowest rates available, check rates periodically with a few competing companies.

Next, look for discounts for things you can easily change or that you already do. Auto insurance policies usually offer discounts for activities ranging from wearing your seatbelt to changing your oil regularly. These discounts will differ a lot between companies, and also can change frequently. Call your insurer to ask what you may qualify for.

If none of these options produce an affordable policy, it may be time to consider getting a cheaper car. Everyone knows that auto insurance for a used family car is less expensive than auto insurance for a sports car. In general, however, cheaper cars are cheaper to insure. Consider trading in your current car for a less expensive one.

Finally, think about moving to what your insurance company considers to be a low-risk area. According to statistics, drivers in urban areas typically pay about twice as much for auto insurance as what people in rural areas pay.

There are many ways to save on auto insurance. Most methods only require a few minutes of time to set up and can save hundreds of dollars over a year.

Getting the best insurance rates can save you thousands of dollars in the long run. If you are not sure about the cost of insurance or how to save money on it, you should read automobile insurance rates for tips and information.

Kanetix Rate Study Shows That Car Insurance Costs Increasing

Friday, July 15th, 2011

Drivers in need of automobile insurance in Quebec, Alberta and Ontario better prepare to pay more for their policies. According to a recent study, auto insurance rates rose in all of these provinces.

Kanetix, a provider of online auto insurance quotes, released its quarterly survey of car insurance rates in early July. The results couldn’t have been much of a surprise for Canadian drivers: Though insurance rates in the provinces may be stabilizing, they’re still rising. And that’s bad news for anyone in Alberta, Quebec or Ontario who relies on an automobile.

According to the Kanetix survey, auto insurance rates in Ontario rose 6.4 percent in the second quarter of 2011 when compared to the same quarter one year earlier. At the same time, motorists in Alberta and Quebec also faced year-over-year increases, though these jumps were considerably smaller. Auto insurance rates rose a modest 0.2 percent in Quebec in the first quarter of 2011 when compared to the same quarter in 2010. In Alberta, rates in the first quarter checked in at 1.4 percent higher than in the first quarter one year earlier. Of course, just because average insurance rates are rising, this doesn’t mean that all motorists have to bear the brunt equally. Savvy drivers in all three provinces can take steps to reduce the amount of money they pay each year to their auto insurers.

For instance, motorists can save a significant amount of money on their auto insurance policies by taking out multiple forms of insurance from the same company. The Kanetix survey found that consumers could save from 5 percent to 15 percent on their cost of auto insurance if they take out life or property insurance policies from the same insurance companies.

The Kanetix study also found that consumers could save money by selecting higher deductibles. According to Kanetix, consumers who make the change from a deductible of $500 to one of $1,000 could save from 5 percent to 10 percent on their car insurance premiums.

Unfortunately, not nearly enough motorists take advantage of possible premium discounts, Kanetix found. According to the company’s survey, more than 50 percent of drivers in Ontario did not take advantage of the multi-line discounts that insurance companies offer them. The survey also found that more than 50 percent of drivers did not participate in the Roadside Assistance discount, while nearly 20 percent did not take advantage of the winter tire discount that a growing number of insurance companies offer.

In today’s challenging economy, in which unemployment is rising, home values are dropping and credit card balances are soaring, it’s more important than ever for motorists to take advantage of every possible discount that they can nab. There are ways to save money on auto insurance, even in provinces — such as Ontario, Quebec and Alberta — in which the average cost of premiums continues to rise. It’s up to consumers to recognize these possible cost savings and take advantage of them.

Those that don’t? They’ll just be making the global financial crisis that much harder on their own finances.

Five Things You Should Know Before Getting A Car Insurance Policy

Monday, September 27th, 2010

It seems as though the world is constantly bringing forth newer and safer vehicles, but they definitely don’t fix human error. This is why you need auto insurance regardless, because those unexpected times can play a major role on how the next chapter in your life begins. Even if you’re the best driver out there you have to have some sort of car insurance, which means finding the right coverage in your policy.

Understanding the value of your car is one of the most important things to know upfront. It will give you the inside look as to whether or not you need collision insurance. This is what pays for the other property that has been damaged. If you need comprehensive insurance then you will be covering any loss or damage outside the car accident. These options can save you from future headaches, so strongly consider both of them.

It’s also a good idea to read your state laws, because most of them require liability insurance and personal injury protection. Meeting the minimum requirements is your first step, but additional parts to your policy will also be needed. We always recommend purchasing a little more for your car insurance, because being over prepared is a lot better than not being prepared.

You should also go over the terms of the policy. If you have questions and know someone with a similar vehicle, ask them what you can do. It’s possible that they have already done the leg work to find the best auto insurance for them. If it saves you some money then you will definitely enjoy the benefits. Just remember that something like double coverage only means you pay more, because it doesn’t mean double protection!

While all this is great you still have to figure out what type of personal needs you want in a policy. This will revolve around your budget, the type of mileage you put on your vehicle, and what types of risks you run when driving.

Then of course you should always consider the other types of insurance available. Whether it’s your health or homeowner’s insurance, either one could help pay for damages during an accident. Just remember that you have to do your research or you will end up giving auto insurance company money when you didn’t have to at all.

Insurance, no matter how boring (all that paperwork!), is basically a gamble. Using math and figures, actuaries try to determine the risks and benefits of financial decisions so keep that in mind when you’re trying to decide how much you’re willing to pay. Because the more you expect insurance to cover you, the higher your premiums will turn out to be.

Only then will you find the best auto insurance available. If you have stories that revolve around car insurance, please leave them below. Your two cents could save someone else hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
